Port Elizabeth, now part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, is a coastal city dubbed the “Friendly City,” famed for its sandy beaches like Humewood and its vibrant waterfront along Algoa Bay.

It combines a rich history—from its British colonial roots to its role in the anti-apartheid struggle—with natural attractions, including proximity to Addo Elephant National Park and a thriving local arts scene.

Port Elizabeth, is now officially called Gqeberha. The name change was gazetted on February 23, 2021, and reflects the isiXhosa name for the Baakens River, which flows through the city.
