Derren Brown is an English mentalist, illusionist, and writer known for his psychological illusions and magic shows. He describes himself as a “psychological illusionist” and often incorporates audience participation and comedy into his performances. Brown’s acts are designed to expose the methods of those who claim to possess supernatural powers, such as faith healers and mediums, by using a combination of psychology, showmanship, magic, misdirection, and suggestion.

Brown began his career in 1992 and made his television debut with the show “Mind Control” in 2000. Since then, he has starred in several more shows for stage and television, including “Something Wicked This Way Comes” (2006) and “Svengali” (2012), which won him two Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Entertainment.
In 2019, Brown made his Broadway debut with the stage show “Secret.” He has also written books for both magicians and the general public, including “Tricks of the Mind,” which discusses various psychological techniques used in his performances.
Brown often claims to reveal the methods behind his illusions, but these are typically additional layers of misdirection. He uses a variety of techniques to ensure his audience cannot deduce the methods behind his illusions, including traditional magic techniques, memory techniques, hypnosis, body language reading, cognitive psychology, cold reading, and psychological and subliminal suggestion.
Some critics have argued that his presentation as a skeptic might be misleading, but Brown maintains that he neither has nor believes in any kind of psychic power.
